MORE ABOUT SEXUAL TRAUMA AND GENDER BASED VIOLENCE SUPPORT

Sexual Trauma & Gender Based Violence Support

Compassionate, Trauma Informed Care Centered on Safety, Choice, and Healing

Experiences of sexual violence, intimate partner violence, exploitation, or coercion can affect many parts of your life. You may find it difficult to feel safe, trust others, connect with your body, or make sense of what happened. You may also be carrying fear, anger, shame, grief, or conflicting emotions that are difficult to put into words.

There is no single way to respond to trauma, and there is no timeline for healing.

At Four Wings Psychology, we provide trauma informed support for people who have experienced sexual and gender based violence in Kanata and virtually across Ontario. Our approach prioritizes safety, autonomy, and respect, giving you space to process your experiences without judgment or pressure.

Experiences We Support

Sexual and gender based violence can occur within relationships, families, workplaces, communities, institutions, or situations involving exploitation. Sometimes the experience is easy to name. Other times, you may still be trying to understand what happened or how it has affected you.

We support people with experiences related to

• Sexual assault or sexual violence
• Intimate partner and domestic violence
• Sexual coercion or violations of consent
• Human trafficking and sexual exploitation
• Experiences of violence or exploitation within sex work
• Controlling or abusive relationships
• Trauma related to sexuality, intimacy, or the body
• Shame, self blame, or confusion following harmful experiences
• Cultural or community stigma related to experiences of violence

You don't need to use a particular label for your experience in order to seek support.

How Trauma Can Affect You

Trauma can affect much more than memories of what happened. It can influence your nervous system, relationships, sense of identity, and ability to feel safe in everyday life.

You may notice

• Anxiety, fear, or hypervigilance
• Feeling disconnected from yourself or your body
• Difficulty trusting others
• Challenges with intimacy or sexual relationships
• Shame, guilt, or self blame
• Emotional numbness or feeling shut down
• Intrusive memories or reminders of past experiences
• Difficulty setting or maintaining boundaries
• Feeling uncertain about your needs, choices, or sense of self

Your responses are understood within the context of what you have experienced. Therapy can help you approach them with greater understanding and compassion.

What to Expect at Four Wings Psychology

Our work begins with creating a relationship where you feel respected and have meaningful choice in the process.

You will not be expected to share every detail of what happened or revisit experiences before you feel ready. Together, you and your therapist will determine what feels important to work on and what pace feels manageable.

Depending on your needs, therapy may help you

• Build a greater sense of emotional and physical safety
• Understand trauma responses and triggers
• Develop grounding and emotional regulation skills
• Process difficult experiences when you feel ready
• Reconnect with your body in ways that feel safe
• Strengthen boundaries and your sense of agency
• Navigate relationships, intimacy, and trust
• Reduce shame and self blame
• Reconnect with identity, values, and a sense of self beyond what happened

Healing doesn't mean forgetting your experiences. It can mean having greater freedom in how they shape your present.

Care That Recognizes Identity and Context

Experiences of violence don't happen outside of culture, identity, or community. Race, gender, sexuality, immigration experiences, disability, financial circumstances, family expectations, and access to support can all influence how violence is experienced and how safe it feels to seek help.

Our approach is trauma informed, culturally responsive, LGBTQ2S+ affirming, and respectful of diverse experiences with sexuality and relationships.

We recognize that some clients may also carry experiences of discrimination, stigma, or systems that have not responded to them with the care they needed.

There is room for all of these parts of your experience in therapy.

Our Approach

At Four Wings Psychology, support for sexual and gender based violence is

• Trauma informed and grounded in safety
• Collaborative and respectful of your autonomy
• Compassionate and non judgmental
• Culturally responsive and anti oppressive
• LGBTQ2S+ affirming
• Sensitive to experiences involving exploitation and sex work
• Adapted to your individual needs, readiness, and goals

You remain an active participant in decisions about your care

Moving Toward Safety and Connection

What happened to you doesn't have to define every part of what comes next.

Therapy can provide space to understand your experiences, reconnect with your own needs and boundaries, and gradually build a greater sense of safety, choice, and connection.

At Four Wings Psychology, we'll meet you with compassion, respect, and care as you decide what healing looks like for you.
