Parenting Plan Assessments

Clear, Neutral, and Child-Focused Evaluations for Family Court Matters

When families are navigating separation, parenting disputes, or court involvement, decisions about children can feel complex and high stakes. In these moments, having a structured, neutral, and clinically informed assessment can provide clarity and direction.

At Four Wings Psychology, we offer parenting plan assessments, parenting plan evaluations, Voice of the Child Reports, and focused assessments in Nepean and across Ontario. Our approach is grounded in objectivity, clinical expertise, and a clear focus on the best interests of the child.

Our Assessment Services

We provide a range of family law-related assessments to support decision making, reduce conflict, and bring forward the needs and perspectives of children in a clear and respectful way.

Parenting Plan Assessments
Comprehensive evaluations that examine parenting capacity, family dynamics, and the needs of the child. These assessments support recommendations related to decision making responsibility and parenting time.

Parenting Plan Evaluations
Focused reviews of proposed or existing parenting arrangements. These assessments help determine whether a plan is workable, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with the child’s best interests.

Voice of the Child Reports
Child-focused reports that gather and present the views and preferences of the child in a developmentally appropriate and neutral manner. These reports help ensure that the child’s voice is heard within the legal process.

Focused Assessments
Targeted evaluations that address specific concerns such as parenting capacity, relocation, communication challenges, or particular areas of dispute. These are narrower in scope than full custody assessments and can often be completed more efficiently.

Our Approach

All assessments at Four Wings Psychology are conducted with care, structure, and attention to fairness. We understand the importance of neutrality and clarity in court-involved matters.

Our process is
• Child focused and grounded in best interest standards
• Structured, transparent, and clearly communicated

• Respectful of all parties involved
• Based on clinical expertise, observation, and multiple sources of information

We aim to provide reports that are thorough, balanced, and useful for families, legal professionals, and the court.

What to Expect

The assessment process varies depending on the type of evaluation, but typically includes
• Individual interviews with caregivers
• Meetings with the child or children when appropriate
• Review of relevant documents and collateral information
• Consultation with professionals involved with the family when needed
• Structured analysis and a written report with findings and recommendations

Throughout the process, expectations, timelines, and steps are communicated clearly so that all parties understand how the assessment will proceed.

About the Assessor

Assessments are conducted by Johanne Colas, a bilingual Registered Social Worker and Clinical Investigator with extensive experience in child welfare, family law, and trauma informed practice.

Johanne has nearly two decades of experience working with children, families, and complex systems. She has been a panel member with the Office of the Children’s Lawyer since 2018, where she conducts Section 112 investigations and provides clinical insight into high conflict parenting matters across Ontario.

Her professional background includes over 13 years of frontline and clinical experience with the Children’s Aid Society and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. During this time, she worked within multidisciplinary teams on cases involving child protection, trauma, and developmental concerns. She has significant courtroom experience, including testifying on assessment findings and providing evidence in child protection matters. Her reports are recognized for their clarity, neutrality, and clinical depth.

Johanne specializes in high conflict parenting disputes and complex family systems, including cases involving multiple professionals or agencies. She has extensive experience working with families where safety concerns or intimate partner violence may be present, and integrates risk informed and trauma aware analysis into her work.

Her assessments are informed by a strong foundation in child development, attachment, trauma, and risk assessment. She is also experienced in working with families from diverse cultural and immigration backgrounds, and integrates this context thoughtfully into her assessments and recommendations.

Services are available in both English and French.

Her assessment process is structured, transparent, and aligned with best practice standards for court involved evaluations. A detailed curriculum vitae is available upon request.
