Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model

Healing Trauma by Restoring Safety, Connection, and Self-Trust

Trauma and attachment wounds don’t just live in memory: they shape how you feel in your body, how you relate to others, and how safe it feels to be yourself. You might notice patterns of anxiety, emotional shutdown, people-pleasing, hypervigilance, or deep self-doubt that feel hard to shift, even when you understand them intellectually.

The Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model offers a compassionate, whole-person approach to healing. It brings together trauma-informed, somatic, and attachment-based care to help you process past experiences, strengthen emotional regulation, and build a more secure relationship with yourself and others.

At Four Wings Psychology, we offer the use of the Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model within sessions in Nepean and virtually across Ontario. Our clinicians work with care, attunement, and clinical expertise to support healing that is paced, relational, and deeply respectful of your lived experience.

What is the Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model?

Created by Lori Gill, this model is intended to guide clients through reprocessing their memories of trauma, work towards physical and emotional regulation of the body, and support with decreasing symptoms of trauma. This model recognizes the neuroscience of how trauma can impact the brain and how our bodies are impacted by trauma, while also considering how trauma and attachment can be deeply intertwined. Early relationships shape how we learn to feel safe, view ourselves, manage emotions, and connect with others - and traumatic experiences can disrupt these foundations at any stage of life.

Additionally, when we have experienced a traumatic event, sometimes we can acknowledge something logically, but it feels as though our body still holds onto the impacts of the event. When reprocessing traumatic memories, we want to encourage communication in the brain, as well as consider how our body feels throughout the process, allowing us to work towards honouring our needs in a holistic way.

The Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model is a structured model that draws from multiple evidence-based frameworks to support healing on emotional, relational, cognitive, and nervous system levels.

This model often integrates elements of:

  • Attachment-focused and relational therapies
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) using bilateral stimulation
  • ACT and CBT for coping, reframing, and meaning-making
  • Somatic awareness and nervous system regulation
  • Parts-based or inner-systems work related to visualization
  • Sensory processing

The goal isn't just symptom relief, but increased safety, connection, and self-understanding over time.

When Trauma and Attachment Wounds Intersect

Trauma and attachment injuries can develop from many experiences, including early caregiving disruptions, relational harm, loss, neglect, abuse, or overwhelming events later in life. When these experiences remain unprocessed, they may show up as:

  • Fear of abandonment or difficulty trusting others
  • Emotional numbness or intense emotional reactions
  • People-pleasing, self-silencing, or overfunctioning
  • Difficulty setting boundaries or feeling secure in relationships
  • Chronic shame, self-criticism, or low self-worth
  • Hypervigilance, anxiety, or a sense of being unsafe
  • Push-pull dynamics in close relationships
  • Parenting stress rooted in your own attachment history

These responses aren't flaws: they're adaptations shaped by your nervous system to help you survive. Therapy helps you gently update those patterns so they no longer run your life.

What This Approach Can Help With

The Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model can support healing related to:

  • Complex or developmental trauma
  • Childhood emotional neglect or relational trauma
  • Attachment injuries in adult relationships
  • PTSD or trauma-related anxiety and depression
  • Chronic shame or identity confusion
  • Traumatic loss
  • Relationship patterns that feel repetitive or painful
  • Emotional regulation difficulties or dissociation

This model is especially helpful when talk therapy alone hasn’t felt sufficient, or when healing needs to happen within the safety of a supportive relationship.
