Art-Based Therapy

Creative Expression to Support Emotional Growth, Healing, and Connection

Not all children and youth have the words to explain what they're feeling. Sometimes emotions show up as behaviours, withdrawal, or overwhelm. Art-based therapy offers another way in.

Through drawing, painting, storytelling, and creative expression, children and youth can explore their inner world in a way that feels natural, safe, and engaging.

At Four Wings Psychology, we offer art-based therapy for children and youth. Our therapists use creative approaches alongside evidence-based care to help young people express themselves, process experiences, and build emotional skills in a supportive environment.

What Is Art-Based Therapy?

Art-based therapy uses creative processes to support emotional expression, self-understanding, and healing. It is not about artistic skill or creating something “perfect.” It is about using art as a way to communicate, explore, and make sense of feelings.

For many children and youth, art can feel safer than direct conversation. It allows them to show rather than tell, and to process experiences at their own pace.

Art-based therapy is always
• Developmentally appropriate and flexible
• Grounded in emotional safety and trust
• Adapted to each child or youth’s interests and comfort level
• Integrated with other therapeutic approaches when helpful

How Art-Based Therapy Helps

Creative expression can support children and youth in ways that feel accessible and empowering. Through art-based therapy, they can
• Express emotions that are hard to put into words
• Build emotional awareness and regulation skills
• Process difficult experiences in a gentle and contained way
• Reduce anxiety and emotional overwhelm
• Strengthen confidence and sense of identity
• Improve communication and connection with others

Art becomes a bridge between what is felt inside and what can be understood and shared.

What Art-Based Therapy Can Support

Art-based therapy can be helpful for a wide range of concerns, including
• Anxiety, worry, or stress
• Big emotions such as anger or sadness
• Low self-esteem or self-doubt
• Social challenges or peer conflict
• Family changes such as separation or relocation
• Grief, loss, or difficult life events
• Trauma or emotionally overwhelming experiences
• Identity exploration during adolescence

Children and youth do not need to be in crisis to benefit. Art-based therapy can also support growth, confidence, and emotional development over time.

What to Expect at Four Wings Psychology

We begin by getting an understanding of your child or youth’s needs, strengths, and goals. From there, sessions are tailored to their age, interests, and comfort level.

In sessions, your child or teen may
• Use drawing, painting, or mixed media to explore emotions
• Engage in creative storytelling or symbolic expression
• Learn calming and grounding techniques through art
• Reflect on their work in ways that build insight and self-awareness
• Develop tools for coping, communication, and resilience

Caregivers are included as partners in the process, with regular check-ins and guidance to support your child outside of sessions.

Why Choose Four Wings Psychology

At Four Wings, art-based therapy is grounded in both creativity and clinical care. Our therapists are trained in child and youth development and use evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches to support emotional well-being.

Our approach is
• Compassionate and child-centred
• Trauma-informed and emotionally safe
• LGBTQ2S+ affirming and inclusive
• Culturally responsive and respectful of each family’s context
• Collaborative, with caregiver involvement and support
• Available in person in Nepean, with virtual options when appropriate

We create space for children and youth to express themselves in ways that feel natural, supported, and meaningful.
